Spec Sprites are intended as an inexpensive, fun, safe, and cheap(!) way to enjoy vintage racing. Only modest prep to the cars. The fun/$ ratio is superb.

Body:  (top of page)

         Any 1962 to 1974 Sprite or Midget.

         Stock steel only.

1.     Can use glassfibre bonnet.

2.     Can remove interior.

3.     Can remove doorglass and roll –up mechanism.

4.     Cut down windshield OK.

5.     Battery can be relocated and heater box removed.  

 

Engine:  (top of page)

         1275  A series engine.

         1. Must be stock bore and stroke, +. 060 OK.

         2. Pistons, stock dished pistons. Part#21251.

         3. Head must be stock. Can have hardened seats and valves.

         4. Cam, Kent 276.

         5. Can balance engine internals.

         6. Adjustable timing chain OK.

Driveline:  (top of page)

            Stock

1.     4.22/1 final gear.

2.     Clutch is stock, Borg and Beck recommended.

3.     Flywheel, stock, can be lightened.

4.     Transmission, stock ribcase.

Suspension:   (top of page)

            Stock

1.     After-market swaybars OK.

2.     Can lower ride height, cutting front springs OK. Lowering blocks at rear OK.

3.     Shocks, stock, can change oil to increase stiffness.

4.     Panhard bar ok.

5.     Can have any type of bush.

6.     Stock springs, can re-arch springs.

7.     All suspension in stock location points only.

1.     Can use competition pads.

2.     Braided steel flex lines, OK.

3.     Can retrofit early cars to late type brake systems.

2.     Rollbar and safety equipment must fit safety rules where you race.

3.     Follow all rules for your local sanctioning body.

4.     Brake lights must work.

This is a recipe; it leaves you with some choices. We like to keep it simple and straightforward. Cheap comes to mind. We all build our cars to be equal to each other. This way we save money and have fun with the close racing that results. These cars are very reliable, as racecars go. In most cases this recipe will last two or more seasons. If you cheat it will be quite obvious. You will just have to run further up in the pack away from all the fun that we have.
